For many different reasons, sometimes children can’t be raised by their biological parents. Others need to step in to act in the child’s best interests, and to give them a loving home and the best chance at life.

In this captivating true story, Debbie Valleri shares her journey of growing up in the foster care system for 15 years.

Debbie, now 56, shares many inspiring chapters of her life and how she overcame the challenges she endured as a foster child, sharing also her recent connection with her biological family.
Debbie’s story is one of strength, determination, and courage, told in hope that it may bring comfort, support, and understanding to those who have grown up in the foster care system themselves, or to those who have foster children in their care.

About Debbie

Debbie Valleri was born and raised in Melbourne. She became a ward of the state at the age of two and was brought up in a foster home.

After spending 15 years with her foster family, she left home at 17 and lived independently. She loves to keep herself busy and thrives on working hard. She started earning her own money at 12 years of age doing a paper round after school which she did for five years.

Debbie finished school at the end of Year 11 and has since held many different jobs including working in hospitality, retail, the beauty industry, manufacturing, and administration.

In 2000, Debbie was fortunate to be selected to work at the Sydney Olympic Games performing massages and facials on the athletes and the media.

In 2007, she developed her own brand called Livinia Naturals and is involved with everything including formulations, manufacturing, marketing, sales, logistics and administration.

In 2019, at the age of 54, Debbie decided on a career change and with a passion for helping people, she did a 12-month course in Mental Health and will work as a support worker as well as working in her own business on a part time basis.

Debbie is wife to Wal, mum to Geoff and Nanna to Levi and Ava. Debbie and Wal live on a property in the south eastern suburbs of Melbourne, breed Blonde d’Aquitaine cattle as a hobby, and have two beautiful border collies, Lizzie and Rusty.

One of Debbie’s favourite things in life is to travel. She has travelled extensively throughout Australia including a 12-month round trip in 1998. She has also travelled to Asia, Pacific Islands, America, Canada, UK & Europe. She loves to travel solo and immerse herself in culture.

When Debbie turned 50, she travelled solo to Nepal for the first time and embarked on a nine-day trek of the Himalayas to Annapurna base camp. Five years later she returned to Nepal, this time to Everest base camp and trekked for 13 days, reaching 5,364 metres in elevation.

Debbie plans to spend more time travelling the world in the near future and would like to be involved in volunteer programs looking after children in orphanages in Africa and Asia.
